I guess this is no different from tinyurl.com and others, except that I had some fun implementing this feature for myself, friends and family and I know it'll still be here in a few years, which I cannot guarantee of other websites.
When using Firefox, or any other browser which supports such a thing, you can add a quick-search bookmark with the following properties for easy use:

| Description | Type "url <some url>" to be presented with a short-cut url. |
